Rochelle Community Hospital offers advanced 3D digital mammography to help detect breast cancer earlier, when it is most treatable. We make screening easy and accessible with flexible scheduling options — including Walk-In Wednesdays, when no appointment or physician order is needed for screening mammograms.

Mammograms can detect breast changes up to two years before they can be felt, making them one of the most effective tools for early detection. The American Cancer Society recommends:

• A baseline mammogram between ages 35–40
• Annual mammograms starting at age 40

A mammogram involves gentle compression of the breast to obtain clear X-ray images.

• The exam typically takes less than 30 minutes
• If additional imaging is needed, it is completed during the same visit
• Diagnostic mammograms are performed with a radiologist on site, so next steps can be discussed before you leave

• Schedule when breasts are least tender (often the week after your period)
• Avoid lotions, powders, creams, or deodorants the day of your exam
• Consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever beforehand if needed

• No referral is needed for a screening mammogram
• Screening mammograms are covered once per year
• A physician order is required if you have symptoms and need a diagnostic mammogram

Early detection starts with awareness. Rochelle Community Hospital supports the Know Your Lemons® breast health education program, which helps people recognize visual and physical changes that may signal breast cancer.

The “lemons” represent 12 possible warning signs of breast cancer. Some changes are subtle — what matters is noticing anything new or unusual and taking action.

• Any visible change in or around the breast or chest
• Changes in breast size, shape, or contour
• Changes in skin color or appearance
• New lump or thickening
• Nipple changes (inversion, pain, discharge)
• Orange peel-like texture
• Pulling or distortion of the breast
• Redness, soreness, or warmth
• Skin dimpling or puckering
• Swelling, even without a lump
• Unusual itching
